In the Hebrides an evergreen hedge can be the difference between your garden suceeding or failing. It provides protection from the wind, allowing your plants inside the garden a greater oppurtunity to survive as the hedge is taking the brunt of the weather. Using an evergreen hedge as a windbreak has many advantages over a decideous tree wind break; mainly, in winter when the trees have lost their leaves they provide no protection to your plants iin the most extreme weather months.

Hedge Planting

Planting a hedge requires a great deal of preparation to the soil to ensure that the hedge is able to thrive.

 

It is important to remove the grass from the area, turn and feed the soil, add a root builder and plant the hedges at the optimal distant apart ensuring they have sufficient fresh compost.

 

Using this is a guideline will allow you to have a hedge that will protect tthe rest of the garden for many years.

 

 

Hedge Trimming

Trimming a hedge should be done once or even twice a season depending on your circumstances.

 

After the last of the early years frost you will be able to stimulate the thickening of the hedge by removing height from the hedge. This must be done sympathetically to ensure further growth.

 

Hedge trimming can be completed with a variety of tools; secuaturs for a young hedge, loppers for more mature hedge and a petrol hedge trimmer for a dense hedge.

 

If left for years untrimmed a hedge can need a drastic cut back to allow the hedge to thicken and grow properly. This must be done by an experienced professional to ensure the hedge thrives.
